Къде са бут дискетите Windows 3.x ?

There are a few different ways to determine which version of DOS you have. If you can boot to a C: prompt you can enter the command ver and this will output the version of DOS. If you can not boot to a C: prompt, boot with a DOS 5.0 or DOS 6.0 disk and run the dir command on the C: drive, and note the time the files were created. This time corresponds to the version of DOS that's been installed. Note this, and download the appropriate disk.

Can you provide me with some DOS commands?

Sure, but rather than me spending all day typing them out, Everett Murdock Ph.D. of EasyDOS.com has created a comprehensive list of all commands. This list can be found here.

I just installed a new HD, but I can't explore the C: drive, why?

There could be a million reasons why, but the first thing I would check would be the jumpers. Ensure that the new drive is set correctly to Master or Slave depending on the configuration. Also ensure that the ribbon cable is connected properly, remember that the red stripe on the cable goes toward the power connection. If these are correct, check the BIOS to ensure that the new drive shows up. If not, check the HD manufacturer's website for support. If the HD does show up, you will need to first partition the drive and finally format the drive. Firstly boot with a DOS 6.22 disk and when you arrive a the C: prompt enter the fdisk command and create a primary partition. After the partition has been created reboot the computer back into DOS via the boot disk and run the format c: /s command. This will format the c: drive and copy a few system files to the c: drive. Once the format has finished remove the floppy from the drive and reboot the computer one more time. The computer will then boot from the c: drive and you will be presented with a c: prompt.

Why do I get a "Disk can not be acceesed" error when creating a disk?

The program that writes the files to a disk needs to take full control of the A: drive. If you receive this error, close all Explorer windows including all My Computer windows, and all A drive windows. Once all windows have been closed, click the retry button. If you still receive the error, reboot the computer and try again.

Why are there multiple disks for Windows NT/2000/XP?

Windows NT/2000/XP are designed for the business, advanced user, and server market. When these OS's startup, they need to support many different devices, too many to fit on one diskette. Start with disk 1, and when needed the setup program will prompt you to insert disk 2, disk 3, etc.

Do I need all of the NT/2000/XP disks?

Yes, yes you do. You must have all of the disks in order for the computer to boot properly. Windows NT requires 3 disks, Windows 2000 requires 4 disks, and Windows XP requires 6 different disks.

What is Windows 95a?

In 1995, Microsoft introduced Windows 95, which represented the "next step" towards a comprehensive consumer-oriented graphical operating system for PCs (Windows NT had already been created at the time, but was geared towards businesses and servers.) Windows 95 is the great "compromise" operating system. In some respects, it has its own way of handling access to the hard disk, but in other ways it resembles, and even uses, standard DOS. This is how Windows 95 strives for performance while retaining compatibility with older software. Windows 95 in fact includes a version of DOS, that is designed to work with it and its file structures.

When Windows 95 was released, it came with a new and updated version of the traditional FAT file system: VFAT. At the same time, Windows 95 was compatible with older FAT12 and FAT16 partitions and disks The initial version of Windows 95 is now sometimes called "Windows 95A" to distinguish it from later editions, or "Windows 95 Retail" in recognition of the fact that it was the only revision of Windows 95 officially sold to the public. It's important to remember that this version of Windows 95 does not support the FAT32 nor the NTFS file system.

What is Windows 95b, 95c?

Microsoft developed a problem with the operating system as time went on, specifically related to the file systems it supported. As hard disks grew in size, they began to approach the maximum size allowed by a FAT16 partition. This meant that PC makers were forced to divide the drives in their new systems into multiple partitions, which was extra work and which some customers didn't like. People buying new hard disks also had a similar problem. Since hard disks were only going to keep getting bigger, Microsoft had to do something.

That "something" came in the form of the FAT32 file system, which allows for much larger single partitions than the older 16-bit version of FAT. FAT32 support was included in an updated version of Windows 95 that Microsoft released in 1996, along with some other new features. In a move that was controversial at the time, Microsoft decided to make these new operating systems available only to OEMs, no retail version was ever created. The new version of Windows 95 was called "Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2", which is usually abbreviated to "Windows 95 OEM SR2" or "Windows 95 OSR2". It is also sometimes called "Windows 95B".

Between 1996 and 1997, Microsoft actually released three slightly different variants of Windows 95 OSR2:

  • OEM SR2.0: This is the first OSR2 version, also called "Windows 95B".
  • OEM SR2.1: This is OSR2.0 with the addition of a patch to allow (rudimentary) USB support within Windows 95. Also called "Windows 95B".
  • OEM SR2.5: It includes everything from OSR2.1 and also Internet Explorer 4. This variant is often called "Windows 95C".

How do I tell which version of Windows 95 I have?

Control Panel Method

  1. Open the Control Panel: From the Start Menu, select "Settings" and then "Control Panel".
  2. Open System Properties: Double-click on the "System" icon in the Control Panel.
  3. Look At the Version Number: In the upper right-hand part of the dialog box, you will see "System: Microsoft Windows 95". Directly below that will be the version number. If it says "4.00.950" then you have the original Windows 95. If it says "4.00.950a" then you have Windows 95a, with the first service pack applied. If it says "4.00.950 B" then you have Windows 95b, also known as "OEM SR2" or "OSR2".
  4. Exit System Properties: Select "Cancel" to exit the system properties screen.

Boot Screen Graphics Method

Watch the Screen During the boot up of Windows 95: You will want to be looking at the bottom of the Windows 95 "cloud" graphics screen that appears while Windows 95 is booting. You will see a bar at the bottom with different shades of blue that appear to be moving across the screen. If the bar is comprised of "blocks" of color 3a a half-inch wide moving from left to right, this is the original Windows 95. If you see "blocks" moving right to left, you have Windows 95a. If you see smooth, gradual shades of blue moving left to right, this is Windows 95b.

What is the difference between Windows 98 and Windows 98 SE?

Windows 98, among other improvements to Windows 95 includes full support for FAT32, and was sold to the retail market. The operating system also provides the capability of converting an existing FAT16 partition to FAT32. This was the first Microsoft operating system to provide complete "official" support for FAT32. It also supports the older FAT variants. Windows 98SE provided many bug fixes, and a few enhancements.

When I try to download the disks, a bunch of text appears on the screen, why?

With some older browsers when you try to download an exe file it will try to execute the file rather than download it. To correct this, hold the Shift key while clicking on the link.

I need a restore disk for a Dell/Gateway ______. Do you have those, or do you know where I can find them?

These restore disks are specific to each manufacturer and specific to each computer model. I don't have any of these disks on this site, and I don't know of a site that does. You can usually order these disks from the computer manufacturer for a nominal fee, or you could check eBay.

Should I try to fix my computer if it's not broken?

Absolutely not! Please don't touch it, if it's working fine leave it alone!

I have more questions, where can I go for help?

Probably the best resource on the web is ExpertsExchange. It never fails, if I have a question ranging from simple computer repair to network enginering they have the answer.
