Re: Windows XP Home Boot Disk Download

Today I experienced the same disastrous error mentioned in a post above:

" C:\Windows\System32\Config\SOFTWARE is missing or corrupted."

Fortunately I had created a Bart PE bootup disk previously. I managed to boot up to minimal window mode using this disk but still could not fix the problem.

Then I found the solution at this page.

The important part to me was that it revealed where the previous SYSTEM file was kept : e.g. C:\System Volume Information\_restore{D86480E3-73EF-47BC-A0EB-A81BE6EE3ED8}\RP1\Snapshot . There are many such folders in running order like RP1001, RP1002

Using Bart PE CMD line or file manager, I renamed the SYSTEM file in C:\Windows\System32\Config\ to another name e.g. SYSTEM.buggy. Please note : in Bart PE, C: drive can be D: or other letter.

I copied a _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM file from one of the aforesaid folders e.g. C:\System Volume Information\_restore{D86480E3-73EF-47BC-A0EB-A81BE6EE3ED8}\RP1\Snapshot to C:\Windows\System32\Config\ .

Then I renamed it to SYSTEM and then reboot. This should resolve the problem.

If you succeed to bootup to Windows, then click Start>All Program>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore to restore your system to the latest workable registry files.

If you have another computer you can download Bart PE freeware over the Internet to create the said bootup disk.
